APPENDIX 6
SENIOR MANAGEMENT COMMITTEES
Audit Committee
The Audit Committee is the means by which the Secretary ensures that the control framework operating in the department is effective and supports departmental objectives. Chaired by a Deputy Secretary not directly responsible for the oversight of Corporate Management Division, the Audit Committee is charged with enhancing the departments control framework, improving the quality of our externally published financial information, monitoring work area compliance with legislative and departmental instructions, undertaking evaluations and performance audits (including in relation to major departmental projects), and providing advice to the Secretary on any related matter requiring management attention after each quarterly meeting. The committee is composed of the First Assistant Secretary, Corporate Management Division, two assistant secretaries and an independent member. The Chief Finance Officer attends each meeting and the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) attends in an observer capacity.
Ethics Committee
The Ethics Committee is responsible for the development of policy on and the management of conduct and ethics issues. Chaired by a Deputy Secretary not directly responsible for oversight of the Corporate Management Division, the Ethics Committees objectives are to promote high standards of ethical behaviour, prevent fraud and misconduct, ensure that investigations are carried out fairly and expeditiously, and provide clear and consistent guidance on standards of conduct. The committee comprises seven members and two ex-officio members and meets quarterly.
Information Management Advisory Group
The Information Management Advisory Group advises the Senior Executive on the strategic management of information needs within the department. The group is chaired by the Deputy Secretary responsible for information management. Membership of the group is broadly representative of our operations and includes ten divisional representatives at the First Assistant Secretary level, the Chief Finance Officer, two assistant secretaries and the Chair of the Consultative Committee on Information Management. The groups charter is to provide recommendations to the Senior Executive on matters affecting the future direction of information management within the department, and to oversee implementation of the departments Information Management Strategy. There are six meetings a year.
Workplace Relations Committee
The Workplace Relations Committee (WRC) is the chief consultative body for all activities involving Australia-based departmental employees and their conditions of employment within the department. It provides a forum for considering and developing means of improving the quality of the work environment and addressing matters of concern, including those arising from the implementation and operation of the Certified Agreement. The committee is chaired by the Secretary or his nominee, normally a Deputy Secretary, and comprises representatives from management and thirteen employee representatives. The employee representatives include one each from the Foreign Affairs and Trade Association (FATA), the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU), the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) and the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA), and nine other employee representatives (two from each of the three broadbands and one SES employee). The WRC normally meets three times a year.
