Parliament in Australia
The department assisted in the preparation of more than 300 programs for Commonwealth parliamentarians. The majority of these were organised for individual visits; some were for parliamentary delegations. We provided all parliamentarians with updated written advice on the help available from the department for their overseas travel in Overseas Travel by ParliamentariansTravel Assistance Handbook for Parliamentarians and Staff, February 2000.
The work undertaken by the department for the Commonwealth parliament included:
- assisting several Australian parliamentary delegation visits to Europe and the Americas, including separate delegation visits to Turkey, Greece and Cyprus in July 1999; to Sweden and Estonia in October 1999; and to Canada and the United States in October and November 1999. The department supported a visit to Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador in March and April 2000 by the Trade Sub-Committee of the Australian Parliaments Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (JSCFADT). We provided comprehensive oral and written briefing for a parliamentary delegations visit to the institutions of the European Union in June 2000;
- assisting visits by parliamentarians to Japan, China and Hong Kong. A visit to Hong Kong by a delegation from the AustraliaHong Kong Parliamentary Friendship Group underscored Australias support for the continued development of democratic institutions in Hong Kong in accordance with its Basic Law;
- supporting visits to China by three former Prime Ministers (Messrs Fraser, Hawke and Keating);
- providing the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References Committee with supplementary information for its inquiry into developments in Japan. The department also briefed the JSCFADT on developments on the Korean Peninsula and on Australias relations with the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK);
- providing advice on trade policy issues to the Senate Legislation Committee and providing briefings to the JSCFADT and the Senate inquiry into the importation of salmon products;
- supporting and briefing parliamentarians visiting East Timor, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Cambodia;
- supporting Australias Official Observer Delegation to the East Timor ballot during AugustSeptember 1999 and the visit to East Timor in December 1999 by members of the JSCFADT;
- providing parliamentarians with regular briefings on developments in East Timor and Indonesia and giving evidence to the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References Committee inquiry into East Timor;
- supporting parliamentary delegations that travelled to Tonga, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea (PNG);
- supporting visits to New Zealand by six parliamentarians and the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties;
- providing detailed briefings to parliamentarians on the evolving situations in Solomon Islands and Fiji;
- briefing the JSCFADTs inquiry into Bougainville;
- supporting the visit of Australian parliamentarians to Zimbabwe in MayJune 2000 as part of the Commonwealth and Australian Observer Groups;
- supporting parliamentary delegations visiting Tanzania and Jordan; and
- providing a comprehensive statement on Australias relationship with the Middle East to the JSCFADT. We also assisted the Inter-Parliamentary delegation with briefing on Palestinian refugee issues.
