Dear Ministers,

I have pleasure in presenting to you the Annual Report of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for the year ended 30 June 1996. This Report has been prepared in accordance with sub-sections 25(6) of the Public Service Act 1922 and the requirements referred to in sub-section 25(7).

Annual Reports must be tabled in Parliament by 31 October. Sub-section 25(8) of the Public Service Act requires the Report to be placed before each House of Parliament within 15 sitting days after the day on which you receive the Report. I recommend that it be made available to all members of Parliament.

I would like to pay tribute ot the dedicated and professional work of the staff of the Department. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank my predecessor, Michael Costello, for his important contribution to the Department over many years but most significantly as Secretary until March 1996.
