Australian High Commissioner to Samoa, Mr Matt Anderson (far right), speaking with members of the Queensland Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team at the Lalomanu Forward Operating Base during the response to the earthquake and tsunami, which struck Samoa on 29 September 2009. The USAR team were a crucial part of the initial Australian response to the tsunami. They undertook more than 550 hours of search and recovery in physically confronting conditions, and which included numerous aftershocks. One hundred and fifteen Australian personnel were deployed to Samoa as part of an $12 million response package.
