The department made payments totalling $205.4 million consisting of $87.8 million to 26 international organisations and international treaty secretariats, including the United Nations, and $117.6 million to 15 United Nations peacekeeping operations.

In 2007–08, the department paid Australia’s contributions to 26 international organisations and international treaty secretariats and 15 individual United Nations peacekeeping operations. A complete listing of these international organisations is at Appendix 10.
Export Finance and Insurance Corporation (EFIC) National Interest Account

The department managed, in accordance with the national interest provisions of the Export Finance and Insurance Corporation Act 1991, whole-of-government coordination of National Interest Account transactions. This involves assessing the risks and benefits of proposed transactions in consultation with other departments and EFIC. The value of exports supported on the National Interest Account in 2007–08 declined compared with the previous year, primarily due to a decrease in the value of export contracts supported by EFIC on the National Interest Account. The department managed efficiently national interest payments and receipts involving EFIC and the Commonwealth. Further information may be obtained from EFIC’s annual report.

Compensation for detriment caused by defective administration

Ten cases were lodged in 2007–08 under the compensation scheme for detriment caused by defective administration. Ten cases were resolved during the year, including three from the previous year, resulting in five payments made from administered funds. In five cases compensation under the scheme was found not to be warranted. Four cases, including one from the previous year, remained in progress at the end of the year.
