Inquiries by parliamentary committees

The Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee reported on the department's proposed expenditure (Estimates Reports) in March and June 2002, and tabled its Scrutiny of Annual Reports No. 2 of 2001 in August 2001 and Scrutiny of Annual Reports No. 1 in March 2002.

During the review period, the department made submissions or gave evidence to five parliamentary committee inquiries, as follows:

Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade

• Examination of the Annual Report, on 21 May 2002
• Inquiry into the Link between Aid and Human Rights, referred to the Committee on 14 September 2000

Senate Select Committee

• Inquiry into a Certain Maritime Incident, referred to the Committee on 13 February 2002

• Inquiry into Recruitment and Training in the Australian Public Service, referred to the Committee on 21 March 2002

Joint Standing Committee on Treaties

• Inquiry into the Statute of the International Criminal Court, done at Rome on 17 July 1998
  • Departmental officers appeared before the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties at hearings on this matter held in Canberra on 24 September 2001 and on 10 April 2002. The Committee has completed its consideration and tabled its report (Number 45) in May 2002

• Hearings on 20 August 2001 and 17 September 2001 into the following 13 treaties, six of which were tabled on 7 August 2001 and seven on 21 August 2001. The hearings were covered in Report No. 43, which was tabled in September 2001.

  • Agreement with the Kingdom of Thailand on the Transfer of Offenders and Co-operation in the Enforcement of Penal Sentences, done at Hanoi on 26 July 2001
  • Amendments to the 1971 Agreement and Operating Agreement on the International Telecommunications Satellite Organisation (INTELSAT), done at Washington on 17 November 2000
  • Final Protocol and Partial Revision of the 1998 Radio Regulations, as incorporated in the Final Acts of the World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC-2000), done at Istanbul on 2 June 2000
  • Council of Europe Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons, done at Strasbourg on 21 March 1983

  • Agreement with the Republic of Hungary on Cooperation in Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy and the Transfer of Nuclear Material, done at Budapest on 8 August 2001
  • Exchange of Notes constituting an Agreement with the United States of America concerning Cooperating on the Application of Non-Proliferation Assurances, done at Washington on 31 July 2001
