Agreement between the Government of Australia and the Government of the People's Republic of China on the Transfer of nuclear material and Agreement between the Government of Australia and the Government of the People's Republic of China for Co-operation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy
Description of issue
The Agreements provides for the supply of Australian uranium for peaceful uses in China's nuclear energy program and for cooperation in a wide range of peaceful nuclear activities. Under the Agreements, any transferred uranium, or other nuclear-related material, equipment, components or technology would be subject to strict safeguards consistent with Australia's long-standing policy designed to ensure that the use of Australian nuclear material, or cooperation by Australia in nuclear matters, is solely for peaceful purpose.
Date of effect
The Agreement was signed in Canberra on the 3rd of April 2006 and was tabled in Parliament on 8 August 2006, and entered into force on 3rd February 2007.
