Young Leaders Exchange Program
Objective
- Increased understanding between current and future leaders and opinion makers in both countries
Strategies
- Promote increased understanding among young Australian and Malaysian leaders of each other’s political, economic and social systems
- Expose selected young leaders to political, economic, social and intellectual aspects of life in each others’ countries
- Encourage direct and continuing dialogue between future leaders and opinion makers in both countries through regular exchanges
Media Program
Objectives
- To achieve a well-informed image of Australia in Malaysia
- To encourage well-informed Malaysian media interest in Australia and well-informed Australian media interest in Malaysia
Strategies
- Promote increased exposure to Australia in Malaysia and to Malaysia in Australia through media
- Encourage professional networking and linkages between professional media bodies in both countries
- Encourage increased knowledge about Australia among representatives of the Malaysian media, in particular, the Malay language media
- Promote Australia’s cultural diversity, economic entrepreneurship, educational excellence, and scientific and technological sophistication
- Increase the numbers of Australian media representatives with Malaysian expertise
Muslim Exchange Program
Objective
- Greater understanding of the role of religions in each other’s country
- Heightened understanding of each other’s societies and cultures by promoting closer links between Australian and Malaysian Muslims
Strategies
- Introduce selected Muslim leaders from Malaysia and Australia to the religious and social aspects of both countries
- Promote Australia’s image as a religiously tolerant multicultural society
- Encourage wider appreciation in Australia of the nature of Islam in Malaysia
- Support and promote activities which showcase the Islamic heritage of Malaysia and South East Asia
Education and Science Program
Objectives
- Increased awareness in Malaysia of Australia as a source of sophisticated scientific research and technology
- To contribute to Australia’s reputation in Malaysia as a provider of quality education
- Increase awareness about Australia in Malaysia
Strategies
- Participate in education and science-related activities that supports the Institute’s key objectives
- Encourage a stronger appreciation among the Malaysian media of Australia’s technical and scientific capabilities
- Work closely with relevant Government and non-Government agencies
Cultural Understanding Program
Objective
- Greater appreciation in both Australia and Malaysia of the quality, sophistication and diversity of each other’s arts and culture
Strategies
- Support activities showcasing the quality and richness of Australia’s arts and culture in Malaysia, and of Malaysia’s arts and culture in Australia
- Work with other organisations to advance cooperation in culture, arts and sport
Public Relations Program
Objectives
- To promote the Institute’s role in increasing the mutual awareness in Australia and Malaysia
- To initiate interest and response from commercial entities in Australia and Malaysia
Strategies
- Hold public events
- Support relevant publications
- Participate in seminars and conferences
Australia-Malaysia Institute Grants
Grant funding for 2007-08 is closed.
The Australia-Malaysia Institute provides financial support to projects aimed at promoting and enhancing bilateral links between Australia and Malaysia. Grants are awarded on a competitive selection basis.
Project proposals which already have or are likely to attract partner funding from other sources, including commercial sponsorship, will be favourably considered.
The AMI is not seeking grant applications at this time. Please watch this website for further up-dates.

Eligibility Criteria
Both individuals and organisations may apply for grants. No person can hold more than one Australia-Malaysia Institute grant at any given time. Grants are not restricted to individuals and organisations from Australia.
Individuals and organisations intending to apply for an AMI grant for an activity which involves travel to Malaysia should read the Australian Government travel advisory for Malaysia prior to lodging an application. This is available online at www.smartraveller.gov.au.
Competition for grant money is considerable, and the Institute may decide not to award a new grant to an individual or organisation that has received a grant in the past. The Australia-Malaysia Institute is committed to the principles of equal opportunity and encourages individuals and organisations from target groups to apply for project funding.
