Welcome to Hallyuwood: Spotlight on Global Popularity of New Korean Cinema

This collaborative research project brought together film and media scholars from the University of Wollongong (Dr. Brian Yecies) and University of New South Wales (Ms. Ae-Gyung Shim) and 2 South Korean scholars from Yonsei University (Dr. Moon-im Baek and Dr. Jung-a Huh). They investigated the global success of the Korean cinema with a comparative case study of the Korean, Australian and French film distribution and exhibition markets. The project’s findings were presented at an AKF-sponsored panel at the Asian Studies Association of Australia Conference hosted by the University of Wollongong in June 2006.

A subsequent refereed journal article – titled "Hallyuwood Down Under: The New Korean Cinema and Australia, 1996-2007” – published in the December 2007 (10th anniversary) issue of Screening the past: an online journal of media and history is providing high-profile exposure to Australian and Korean cross-cultural relations
