With the dual objectives of promoting awareness of the potential of the Indian market amongst Australian business people and promoting Indian awareness of trade and investment opportunities in Australia, the Council supported a range of activities aimed at making bilateral trade opportunities better known and understood in both countries.

The Australia-India Business Exchange Program, which was announced by Deputy Prime Minister the Hon Tim Fischer in India during the Australia India - New Horizons promotion in 1996, seeks to provide young Indian and Australian business executives with first-hand knowledge and experience of each country’s business, economic and social environment and technological infrastructure, and to develop bilateral business contact.

The first exchange visit under the program took place during 1997-98 when Ms Jemma Dacre, of the Perth company Textiles for Nomads, worked in India as part of a collaborative textile industry project to assist the development of interior furnishing and upholstery textiles. Ms Dacre’s visit brought together Australian wool and design capabilities with Indian manufacturing expertise and pointed the way to further areas for collaboration between the Australian and Indian textile industries.

The Council agreed during 1997-98 to provide funding to the Australia-India Business Council for a second series of business exchanges.

The other major project under the Council’s commerce program was the provision of funding to Opportunity International Australia for seminars in Bangalore and New Delhi in November 1998 to develop expertise in the governance and accountability of microenterprise development organisations. The Council subsequently allocated additional funding to Opportunity International Australia for a visit to Australia in July 1998 by Mr Raj Patel, Acting Director of the All India Alliance for Microenterprise Development.
