Alice Tay Memorial Award (in the field of Human Rights)
In recognition of the outstanding work in the area of human rights by the late Professor Alice Tay AM, the Australia-China Council (ACC) created the Alice Tay Memorial Award. The $15,000 Award is made to an Australian who has made a significant contribution to improving the understanding of human rights in China and is seeking funding for a project proposal related to human rights in China.
In 2008, Dr Sean Cooney was awarded the ACC’s Alice Tay Memorial Award. Dr Cooney’s project involves a workshop in Australia for participants from China and Australia involved in labour law enforcement, to be run in collaboration with the International Labor Rights Fund and the Australian Council of Trade Unions.
Two awards have been made in the past:
In 2004, Dr Anita Chan was awarded the renamed Alice Tay Memorial Award in the field of Human Rights, following Professor Tay’s death. Dr Chan researched migrant workers’ rights and the system for household registration.
In 2003, Dr Xiaoyuan Shang received the Council’s inaugural Alice Tay Human Rights Award. Dr Shang’s project was Creating an inclusive social environment for vulnerable children: child protection in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region.
