Australian Studies in China Program

The ACC has been supporting Australian Studies in China for two decades and provides funding to a network of around 20 Australian Studies Centres across China. In 2003 the ACC partnered with a consortium of Australian universities, led by the Australian Studies Centre at the University of Queensland together with the Australian Centre at the University of Melbourne, to promote Australian Studies in China. The ACC’s Australian Studies program is now managed by Professor David Carter at the University of Queensland. Professor Carter can be contacted by email at austudies.china@uq.edu.au.

Australian Studies Program Objectives:

  • Enhance the range, volume, quality and value of research on Australia, and promote the dissemination of research outcomes in China through publishing, conferences and other means.
  • Promote greater Australian content in teaching at all levels of the Chinese educational system.

In 2008-09, Australian Studies Centres in China produced:

  • 80 published scholarly articles
  • 15 published general articles
  • 9 published books
  • 71 unpublished conference papers, and
  • had two PhD and 39 MA completions
  • offered 16 undergaduate and 30 post-graduate courses, and
    taught more than 1,800 university students doing courses in Australian studies

Program Components

  • Book Prize: The 2008 Book Prizes were awarded at the Australian Studies Conference held in Beijing, October 2008. Book prizes are intended to be awarded at the Australian Studies Conference held in Shanghai in late October 2010.
  • Biennial Australian Studies Conference. The Council has financially supported each conference. The 12th Australian Studies conference hosted by East China Normal University in Shanghai from 29-30 October 2010.

    • 1998 Australian Studies Conference: Peking University
    • 1996 Australian Studies Conference: Nankai University, Tianjin
    • 1994 Australian Studies Conference: Zhong Shan (Sun Yat Sen) University, Guangzhou

The Australia-China Council also supports the development of the Shanghai Municipal Library Australian Friendship Collection and the Australian collection at Beijing Foreign Studies University.
