About the Australia-China Council (ACC)

The Council was established by an Order of the Executive Council in 1978 for the purpose of promoting understanding and fostering "people-to-people" relations between Australia and China. The Chairperson of the ACC is appointed by the Executive Council on the recommendation of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, who also appoints the members of the ACC. Council funding is in the form of an annual budget allocation administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The ACC's annual allocation is approximately $750,000. The Council funds projects in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan that are in line with the ACC’s goals in its Strategic Plan for 2011 to 2014.

The ACC's funding priorities have changed over the past three decades as the Australia-China relationship has matured. Currently funding of general grants constitutes the biggest single category of spending. A significant portion of the Council’s budget is spent on our Australian Studies in China program.
