Emeritus Professor Mark Wainwright AM
MAppSc Adel, PhD McM, DSc UniSA

Appointed Chair 9 September 2006 for a period of five years.

Emeritus Professor Wainwright is currently a visiting professor at the University of New South Wales and UNSW Asia Singapore following his retirement from the position of Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of New South Wales which he held for two years from 1 July 2004.

Prior to that appointment, Professor Wainwright had been the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University from mid-April 2004. He was Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and International), from January 2001.

Professor Wainwright holds an Honours Degree in Applied Chemistry and a Master of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Adelaide, a PhD in Chemical Engineering from McMaster University in Canada and a DSc for his research into skeletal catalysts from the University of South Australia.


Mr Kevin Hobgood-Brown

Appointed 15 October 2007 for three years

Kevin Hobgood-Brown is the Group Executive and General Counsel at Sino Gold Mining Ltd. He is the immediate past Chairman of the Australia China Business Council and former partner at the international law firm of Deacons. He is on the Advisory Board of the China Research Centre of the University of Technology, Sydney and is a member of the International Council of the Asia Society. Mr Hobgood-Brown has lived and worked in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taipei. From 1983-1987, he taught on the law faculty of Beijing University.


Professor Susan Street

Appointed 15 October 2007 for three years

Professor Susan Street has a long history of association with China and dance in many guises: as educator, administrator, advisor, guest speaker, judge, writer/editor, choreographer and professional dancer. She is currently Executive Dean of Creative Industries Faculty of the Queensland University of Technology, National President of the Australian Dance Council (Ausdance), and member of the International Advisory Board for the journal Research in Dance Education. Professor Street is a former Arts Advisor to the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Board member of the Hong Kong Ballet, Council member of the Australia Council for the Arts, and Chair of the Education Committee for the World Dance Alliance.


Professor Wai Fong Chua

Appointed 15 October 2007 for three years

Professor Wai Fong Chua holds a number of positions: she is principally the Senior Associate Dean of the Australian School of Business at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and was also a member for ten years of the UNSW Council up until 2008. She is a former member of the External Sustainable Development Advisory Group to the Minerals Council of Australia. Professor Chua has strong professional and family links to China.


Ms Joanna Capon OAM

Appointed 1 January 2008 for three years

Joanna Capon is the Director of her own company, Joanna Capon & Associates. She holds a number of positions in organisations with an arts and health focus including Director of the George Foundation and board member of the following bodies: George Institute for International Health, Museums and Galleries NSW, and Editorial Advisory Board of Art and Australia. Ms Capon is the author of two books (one of which is titled Guide to the Museums of China). She established the art collection at Westmead Children’s Hospital where she is the continuing curator and a member of the Advisory Board and other committees at the hospital.


Peter ClearyMr Peter Cleary

Appointed 31 August 2009 for three years

Peter John Cleary is President, North West Shelf Australia LNG in Perth. Mr Cleary has a deep understanding of Asia developed through years of experience working in the region and evident in an extensive and high profile network of contacts in Japan, China and Korea, as well as a Europe and the Middle East.  Prior to his current position, Mr Cleary was Vice President BP Global LNG in Korea from 2003-2005 and in Hong Kong from 2001-2003.  He also spent over a decade working as a lawyer in various commercial roles in Asia, including for BP Group and BP Australia. Mr Cleary graduated from Melbourne University in 1981 with a combined Bachelor of Commerce/ Law.


Chris ClarkMr Chris Clark

Appointed 10 September 2009 for three years

Chris Clark was appointed Visa's General Manager of Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific in May 2008 following several years working for Visa in Asia. Previously he was General Manager for Taiwan, Hong Kong & Macau and the Philippines for three years. Prior to this Mr Clark was responsible for Visa's business in the Taiwan market, a role he held from 2002. Before joining Visa, Mr Clark served for 14 years in a variety of senior management positions at National Australia Bank, including market management roles in Taiwan and Thailand from 1995-2000. He also worked in consumer and commercial banking, including assignments in Hong Kong and Tokyo. Mr Clark is a fluent speaker of Mandarin, has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Melbourne and is a graduate as well as former Foreign Expert of the Xi'an Foreign Languages Institute.
