UN Reform

Australia has a long and proud record of involvement in the work of the UN and has made acknowledged contributions across a wide spectrum of UN activity. As a strong and active supporter of the UN, Australia has long argued that reform of the UN system is needed to ensure that the organisation reflects today's world, and is able to function efficiently and effectively.

Australia is pleased at the growing recognition of the need for reform. The UN Summit of world leaders in September 2005 made useful progress in reforming the United Nations, but further ambitious refoms are needed to reinvigorate the organisation.

High-level commitment by Member States' governments will be essential to strengthening the capacity of the UN to respond to contemporary challenges. Australia will remain a strong advocate for reform of the UN so the organisation continues to remain effective in fulfilling its mandate into the 21st century. Australia also strongly supports the key recommendations of the High Level Panel on UN System-Wide Coherence, including the "one UN" model which aims to increase the effectiveness of aid delivery and improve development results on the ground.
